Co-sponsored by: Southern California Grantmakers, Philanthropy New York, Northern California Grantmakers, Funders Together for Housing Justice – Los Angeles, and Bay Area Funders Together to End Homelessness
Major sporting events have often led to the displacement of unhoused people, along with harms like labor trafficking and immigration enforcement. As 11 US metropolitan areas prepare to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup next summer—and Southern California the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics—we must take action ASAP to ensure government partners and service providers are held accountable to racial-justice and human-rights values. In light of the July 24 Executive Order that endorses carceral responses to homelessness and the federal police takeover in the District of Columbia, the threat of displacement is even more severe. Yes, the politics are fraught, but we must lean into the complexity and leverage philanthropy’s unique vantage point.
Co-hosted by key regional philanthropy membership organizations and Funders Together for Housing Justice, the discussion will share lessons from past events, highlight Miami activism that won compensation from the NFL for displacing unhoused people, and surface how philanthropy can prevent further criminalization and coordinate with peers. It is open to all U.S. funders, with a focus on World Cup host regions.
