A national network of funders supporting strategic, innovative, and effective solutions to homelessness

Monthly COVID-19 Funder Call

Thursday, January 21, 2021 | 2:00pm ET / 1:00pm CT / 12:00pm MT / 11:00am PT

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, Funders Together to End Homelessness organized funder calls for philanthropy to connect about local responses to COVID-19 for people experiencing homelessness. We have also used these calls to share field updates from our partners and timely information about changing policies. This call in January 2021 will be one of our last regularly-scheduled calls before we transition them to an as-needed basis. We will continue to aggregate and share resources on our COVID-19 Responses for Philanthropy resource page, as well as update add examples and resources to our COVID-19 Response and Recovery Recommendations for Philanthropy.

January 21 Agenda:

  • Policy updates and announcements from Funders Together, including a recap of the last COVID-19 relief package
  • Community updates specific to members' work happening in Baltimore, New York City, Hawaii, and Chicago that will touch on:
    • COVID response that includes a new CDFI initiative and involvement in a housing work group to focus on post-hotel housing,
    • Focusing on Youth Homeless Demonstration Projects during the pandemic to get them to the finish line in Baltimore and Hawaii,
    • Work happening in New York City to enhance the stabilization bed program,
    • A philanthropy-funded study that led to right to counsel legislation being passed,
    • And more!

If you are curious about any of the topics listed above or have questions you'd love our speakers to share their thoughts on, feel free to let us know in advance and we'll weave them into conversation.

We joined Funders Together because we believe in the power of philanthropy to play a major role in ending homelessness, and we know we have much to learn from funders across the country.

-Christine Marge, Director of Housing and Financial Stability at United Way of Greater Los Angeles

I am thankful for the local partnerships here in the Pacific Northwest that we’ve been able to create and nurture thanks to the work of Funders Together. Having so many of the right players at the table makes our conversations – and all of our efforts – all the richer and more effective.

-David Wertheimer, Deputy Director at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Very often a lack of jobs and money is not the cause of poverty, but the symptom. The cause may lie deeper in our failure to give our fellow citizens a fair chance to develop their own capacities, in a lack of education and training, in a lack of medical care and housing, in a lack of decent communities in which to live and bring up their children.

-President Lyndon B. Johnson, 1964 State of the Union Address

Funders Together has given me a platform to engage the other funders in my community. Our local funding community has improved greatly to support housing first models and align of resources towards ending homelessness.

-Leslie Strnisha, Vice President at Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland

Our family foundation convenes local funders and key community stakeholders around strategies to end homelessness in Houston. Funders Together members have been invaluable mentors to us in this effort, traveling to our community to share their expertise and examples of best practices from around the nation.

-Nancy Frees Fountain, Managing Director at The Frees Foundation
