2018 Funders Institute

July 23-25, 2018
Washington, D.C.

The Institute will begin at 9 a.m. on July 23rd, with breakfast available at 8:30 a.m.

We are excited to announce that we will once again be offering an extended Funders Institute throughout the National Conference on Ending Homelessness. In addition to the valuable content planned for conference participants, each day will feature workshop sessions planned by Funders Together with content and discussion exclusively for private funders*.

The option to register for both the Funders Institute and full National Conference on Ending Homelessness through Funders Together is now closed. However, those interested in attending the Monday portion of the Funders Institute may still register for Monday-only.

*Please note this event is exclusively for private funders including foundations and United Ways, and philanthropy serving organizations (PSOs).

As funders increasingly turn their attention to preventing homelessness, we must also consider what it means to be both intentional and intersectional.

Join us at the 2018 Funders Institute, held in conjunction with the National Conference on Ending Homelessness, to learn how funders are uniquely positioned to help prevent homelessness. We will discuss how funders are thinking about prevention and how working intentionally with other systems is critical for success. Together, we’ll explore the intersections of homelessness and health, workforce development, criminal justice, and more.

Ending homelessness is too important for us to continue working alone. It is more important than ever for us to start working together, across silos, to strengthen other systems and prevent homelessness before it starts. Join this conversation to learn how other systems are thinking about housing stability and how your work is already helping to prevent homelessness. Throughout the day you will also hear from funders what they’re doing to prevent homelessness in their communities and specific ideas you can take home.

Don’t forget, this year’s Funders Institute will continue throughout the conference with more opportunities to connect with your funder peers and learn about what’s happening across the country.

We joined Funders Together because we believe in the power of philanthropy to play a major role in ending homelessness, and we know we have much to learn from funders across the country.

-Christine Marge, Director of Housing and Financial Stability at United Way of Greater Los Angeles

I am thankful for the local partnerships here in the Pacific Northwest that we’ve been able to create and nurture thanks to the work of Funders Together. Having so many of the right players at the table makes our conversations – and all of our efforts – all the richer and more effective.

-David Wertheimer, Deputy Director at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Very often a lack of jobs and money is not the cause of poverty, but the symptom. The cause may lie deeper in our failure to give our fellow citizens a fair chance to develop their own capacities, in a lack of education and training, in a lack of medical care and housing, in a lack of decent communities in which to live and bring up their children.

-President Lyndon B. Johnson, 1964 State of the Union Address

Funders Together has given me a platform to engage the other funders in my community. Our local funding community has improved greatly to support housing first models and align of resources towards ending homelessness.

-Leslie Strnisha, Vice President at Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland

Our family foundation convenes local funders and key community stakeholders around strategies to end homelessness in Houston. Funders Together members have been invaluable mentors to us in this effort, traveling to our community to share their expertise and examples of best practices from around the nation.

-Nancy Frees Fountain, Managing Director at The Frees Foundation
