Emergency Census Funder Briefing: What's at Stake for Our Communities?

The U.S. Census is facing proposed changes that could have significant consequences for immigrant, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities, as well as the organizations and institutions that rely on accurate federal data.

Last month, the U.S. Census Bureau proposed two new rules that could fundamentally change how the decennial census is conducted, including how residents are counted and how race and ethnicity data are collected. These changes could undermine the accuracy of census data, affect the distribution of federal resources, and make it more difficult for communities to advocate for equitable policies and investments.

This emergency funder briefing will explore what's at stake, what the proposed changes could mean for philanthropy, and how funders can support efforts to protect a fair and accurate census.

Participants will:

  • Learn about the proposed Census Bureau rules and their potential impact on AANHPI and immigrant communities.
  • Explore how changes to census data collection could affect philanthropic investments, public policy, and the distribution of federal resources.
  • Hear about opportunities for funders to connect with community leaders, advocates, and peer institutions to support collective action ahead of the November 2 public comment deadline.
  • Identify immediate and long-term opportunities for philanthropy to support an accurate and inclusive census.

Speakers:

  • Connie Chung Joe, President and CEO, Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP)
  • John C. Yang, President and Executive Director, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC
  • Melina Sanchez, Funder Liaison, Census Funder Collaborative
